What You’ll Be Doing

The purpose of this position is to protect the public by preventing or reducing the risk of illness, communicable disease and injury to the citizens and visitors of Wake County.

Primary Duties:

· Lead the lead poisoning prevention program

· Visit private residences and facilities to inspect for presence of lead contamination and potential for childhood exposure

· Work independently using an X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) to identify lead contamination

· Use approved testing methods to collect environmental samples

· Based on the findings, make accurate reports and data entry into the state lead surveillance system for each case

· Work towards the goal of reducing remediate environmental contamination and preventing future exposures

· Perform evaluation of permitted facilities to achieve compliance with state regulation through enforcement and education as needed, emergency on-call services and disaster assistance

· Serve as an educational resource to the public

· Investigate public health complaints, foodborne illness and communicable disease

· Duties may change based on the needs of the Department

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 30 semester hours in physical or biological science. Two years of experience in environmental health. NC Registered Sanitarian (NCREHS) or NEHA authorization required. A valid driver’s license and a “safe” driving record required. Equivalent education and experience combination accepted.

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

· NC Registered Environmental Health Specialist (NC REHS)

· NC DHHS EH Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention (CLPP) Authorization

· Lead Risk Assessor Certification

· Lead Inspector Certification
